Ben Bradish-Ellames (b. 1990, Somerset, England) is a London-based photographer and printmaker whose highly stylised images explore the human body in motion. Working collaboratively with fashion designers and dancers, he moves beyond traditional portraiture, treating the figure as a compositional and formal element that can be fragmented, repositioned and transformed within the photographic frame.
His practice is informed by a broad range of 20th-century painters, and his photographs are constructed with an intentionally painterly sensibility. The emotive use of colour in the work of Mark Rothko, the spatial and psychological tension of Francis Bacon, and Edgar Degas’s exploration of the human figure in dance all provide important points of reference.
Each composition is meticulously assembled, layer by layer, creating a carefully constructed encounter between figure and space. While the dancer’s physicality remains central, the body is simultaneously abstracted through colour, composition, light and scale. Photography becomes, in this process, less a means of representation than a space in which the body is translated into form, gesture and emotion.
Bradish-Ellames currently runs Assembly Darkrooms as a side project and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Commercial Photography at London College of Communication in 2019/20.
